Colossians 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. This was written by the Apostle Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Let’s consider Paul’s situation…in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.
Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.
Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;
In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;
This is just a taste of what this man of God endured. How did he keep going? How could he call it light affliction? Here’s the answer… 2 corinthians 4:17-18 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. Paul refused to focus on the temporal, choosing rather to focus on the eternal. That’s why he could sing and pray in that dark prison. The darkness of the prison around him could not extinguish the light of the Gospel in him! There’s a jailer that’s sure glad of that! Amen. Pastor
