Watch your mouth!

Psalm 34:13-14 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.  When I was growing up cursing and swearing was not nearly as common as it is today.
Yes, I’m 66 years old, been a while since then!  There was a common phrase used in that era when someone would say something inappropriate, it was simply… WATCH YOUR MOUTH!
Little did I know that the Bible is conveying the same thought.
Listen to James… chapter 3:8-10 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.  Since it is clear that no one can tame the tongue, what must we do?  We must yield the tongue, that little member, to the Holy Spirit of God.  Have you ever said something and immediately knew that you shouldn’t have?
When that happens it’s best to go ahead and practice two of the hardest words for us to say… I’m sorry.  When another person is involved,  tell them first, then tell the Lord.  As Christians we are supposed to be slow to speak,  and swift to hear.  Amazing how we get that backwards, isn’t it?  Lord help us this day to honor you with our lips.  May we watch our mouths as we watch the sky for your imminent return.  Amen.
