Luke 5:4-5. Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. Simon Peter was about to learn a very important lesson in life. Simply stated, when it doesn’t make sense, obey anyway! Peter was a professional fisherman. He and others had fished all night and caught nothing. Jesus had sat on the side of the boat, a little ways from shore, and taught the people. When He finished speaking He instructed them to launch out into the deep and let down their nets. Mind you, they had just finished cleaning them after a night of catching nothing but weeds! Peter must have thought… Lord, you got to be kidding me! The Bible doesn’t say, but I would imagine after a hard all nighter out on the sea fishing that they were quite tuckered. Now here comes the good part… Though it didn’t make sense to Peter, he used the word NEVERTHELESS.
It’s as if he was saying, we probably won’t catch anything, but we will do it Lord because you said to do it! Now for the rest of the story… Peter launched out, let down the net, and caught so many fish that their net break, and they had to call other ships to help haul the catch! Now notice what happened… Luke 5:8-9 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken. Peter was ashamed of himself for not believing God to start with. Will you and I determine to obey God even when it doesn’t make sense? Please help us Lord Jesus to get to the place where we realize you can always be trusted. Nevertheless, at thy word, that’s where the victory lies. Amen. Pastor
