Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
In his book, Lee: The Last Years, Charles Bracelen Flood reports that after the Civil War, Robert E. Lee visited a Kentucky lady who took him to the remains of a grand old tree in front of her house. There she bitterly cried that its limbs and trunk had been destroyed by Federal artillery fire. She looked to Lee for a word condemning the North or at least sympathizing with her loss. After a brief silence, Lee said, “Cut it down, my dear Madam, and forget it.” It is better to forgive the injustices of the past than to allow them to remain, let bitterness take root and poison the rest of our life. How in the world can we forgive? There is so much injustice and hurt every way we turn. Let me share a few words that may help.
1. COMPARISON… take a few moments to go by Calvary and compare what you’re facing to what Christ endured for us all. Father forgive them was the cry from the cross.
2. CONFESSION… an unforgiving spirit is a sin!
Confess it as such and repent! In so doing you will refrain from the root and the fruit of bitterness.
3. COMPASSION… it takes the Love of God to forgive. Love one another! 1 Thessalonians 4:9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another. Have you been forgiven? Then forgive! Amen. Pastor
