John 21:20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
How is it that a “Son of thunder” becomes a “beloved apostle”?
The key is found in today’s verse…by being close to and sensitive to the heartbeat of the Savior. John called himself that other disciple, or the disciple whom Jesus loved. He was determined not to elevate himself, but rather to lift up the one who loved him and gave himself for him. It takes courage to stand up for truth. But always remember truth must be tempered with love. Consider…Ephesians 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: John knew what it meant to grow up into Him!
He knew very well that courage or compassion alone was not going to benefit the people he loved. Their must be a Holy Spirit mixture of the two. There are some things in 1st John he desires for us to know! He had the courage to say them, and at the same time compassion in his heart for Gods people. Here’s a challenge…Take your Bible this week and slowly read through 1st John. Underline or highlight each time you read the words know, known, or knoweth. You’ll be amazed at what this dear saint of God, with courage and compassion, has revealed to us in God’s word. Consider these verses…1 John 5:2-3 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
It is courage and compassion that makes a real difference in this world for the cause of Christ!
