1 Peter 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: The importance of obedience in the life of the believer cannot be overstated. We find our Lord’s emphasis on the subject in the life of Saul, the first king of Israel.
1 Samuel 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. The Lord told Saul to go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not. But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs. Saul and the people only partially obeyed! In the eyes of God, partial obedience is complete disobedience. Saul may have had good intentions in sparing the best of the sheep for sacrifice, but Samuel let him know emphatically that it would have been better to obey God. There will be times in the life of the believer that we may not understand why the Lord is leading in a certain direction, or instructing us to do a certain task. It is not for us to understand, it is for us as God’s dear children to obey. When our children were small, at times they were told to do something and the response was… wait for it…
WHY? Because daddy said so, that’s why! There are many instructions for the child of God in the Bible. Why should we be obedient, because God said so! To obey is better than sacrifice.
It pleases the Lord when by faith we obey his word. To obey the Lord is for our own good, and for our Lord’s glory. Acts 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. Men will tell you that obedience is really not that important. God says otherwise. Ask Saul. Amen.
