Matthew 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, The Scribes and Pharisees loved attention. In Matthew 6 we find their alms giving and their praying was to be seen of men. Jesus instructed us to be not like the hypocrites who do what they do to impress others. Clearly our Heavenly Father is not impressed with an outward show, but rather an inward glow from the heart. In our text we find that they also dressed to impress men. They loved the uppermost rooms, and the chief seats in the synagogues. Attention seekers. Look at me, look at me! How sad to live life in such a manner. One reason these religious zealots hated Jesus is because the attention they were used to getting was now slipping away. Great crowds followed Jesus. He spake as one having authority.
As God’s children we should never be attention seekers. Our life should not be lived in such a way that it proclaims look at me, but rather look at Him! The one who died for me. The one who lives in me! The one who cares for me! The one who is leading me! The one who’s coming back for me! Paul had a great education, yet he did not use enticing words of man’s wisdom to draw attention to himself. His aim in life is found in these verses…
Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Paul’s life exclaimed… Look at Him!
May God help us that our lives would do the same. Amen. Pastor
