Psalm 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. When I think of delight I think of the dessert after a meal. The meat, potatoes, and vegetables are necessary, and as such are seen as duty. We don’t eat the dessert because we have to, we eat it because we enjoy it and we want to. Serving the Lord should not be a case where we have to, but rather we get to! It’s a privilege to serve the one who willingly laid down His life for me! I don’t have to read the Bible and pray, I get to! I don’t have to go to church, I get to! I dont have to tell others about Jesus, I get to!
It is more than duty, it is a delight to serve the Lord. This is the difference between serving the Lord with gladness and serving the Lord without the joy He desires for His children. This kind of service stems from having God’s law in our hearts. It’s not a head relationship, but a heart for God, His people, and His will. I delight to do thy will. The secret is to realize that our flesh fights us. It is the inner man, the new man in Christ that delights in the things of God. There are two natures in every child of God. The old nature must come under subjection to the new nature in order to delight in God’s will and work.
Be led this day of the Spirit, He will lead you to the Scripture, the truth of God’s word. You will find yourself thinking… what an honor to be counted worthy to serve the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords! Delight thyself also in the Lord, it’s so much better than duty alone. Help us this day, Lord Jesus, to serve you with gladness, that others may come to know you, and that they may see the joy you bring to those who delight in you. In Jesus name. Amen. Pastor
