2 Samuel 12:8 And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things. David has been found out! Be sure your sin will find you out. I have personally preached many times about David’s downfall with Bathsheba. I also have heard many messages preached concerning the same. What I have never thought about in the progression of his sin is how it all began. He is guilty of laziness, lust, adultery, putting the bottle to his neighbor’s lips, murder, and deceit. Our text indicates there was a initial sin that is so often overlooked. It is the sin of dissatisfaction and discontentment. He could have had anything he wanted in the kingdom, but instead he wanted that which was forbidden, another man’s wife. The scripture tells us Godliness with contentment is great gain. Consider this passage… Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Had David been thankful for what he had and not dissatisfied, this horrible event may have never happened. There’s a lesson here for God’s people. Even though David was a man after God’s own heart, he failed to recognize the dangers of dissatisfaction. Lord, help us this day to give thanks in all things, and thereby to be satisfied with the blessings bestowed upon us each and every day. Amen. Pastor
