1 Corinthians 4:12 And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: The Apostle Paul not only instructed Christian’s to work, he set the example as well. In Acts 18:3 we find that Paul was a tentmaker. It is important for God’s people to set a good example in our work ethic. Years ago I heard a preacher say… If you are a cotton picker, strive to be the best cotton picking cotton picker picking cotton! Say that ten times fast!
Whatever we endeavor to do, we should do it heartily as unto the Lord. God’s people are to work, not only to meet their own needs, but also that we might be able to help others as well. It is a great privilege to be able to help someone else along life’s way. I am humbled by the fact that so many have been a help to me and my family as we serve the Lord. In turn, God has allowed us to help others. None of this is possible apart from a good work ethic.
Ephesians 4:28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Here’s a verse that places a particular emphasis on the need to work…
One more thing, consider please… 2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. In our society we have made it far too easy for people to be lazy. My dad used to say… Some people wouldn’t take a job in a pie factory tasting pies! Notice the language in the verse above…
If any man WOULD not work,
not any man COULD not work.
There is a huge difference! God knows if a man is unable to work. God also knows if a man is unwilling to work. Paul teaches to us let that man go hungry! God’s people should never be seen as lazy. Our work ethic should be a reflection of our Lord and Saviour. The best work with our hands, is the work birthed in a heart for God, and a heart to help others. Jesus said… I must work the works of Him that sent me while it is day, the night cometh when no man can work. Question, did He do the work for Himself, or for others?
We should go and do likewise.
Amen. Pastor
