Psalm 42:1  As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.  Years ago I was hunting on White Top Mountain in Virginia.  Miles and miles away from civilization.   All the sudden I spotted a little deer running for its life.  When the  deer stopped for a moment her tongue was hanging out.  It was obvious she was exhausted.  I’m sure she would have loved to have a drink from the brook. She took off and then I saw the reason she was running.  She was being persued by a wild dog.  In our text today we’re reminded that in the life of the believer there should be a thirst for God.  Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness!  There is an enemy that is pursuing God’s people.  1 Peter 5:8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:  We need the water of God’s word.   It is the refreshment that will keep us going and keep us safe from the enemy.  The Psalmist is directing his attention and thirst toward God.  There may be times in our lives it seems the enemy is literally nipping at our heels.  Just run to the water!  Jesus is the water of life!  He alone can keep the enemy at bay while at the same time satisfying our thirst.  When we get saved the thirst for salvation is complete in Him.  John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.  Yet the thirst for righteousness is ongoing.
