1 John 5:9-10 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.  He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.  1 John deals with KNOWING that we are saved.  There are two essential keys within just a few verses.  When we trust Jesus as our Savior immediately the Holy Spirit takes up His abode in our hearts.  He is the WITNESS within!  If someone were to ask me… are you saved, do you know for sure Heaven will be your home when you leave this world… the answer is YES I KNOW.  You see, there’s a witness within that says amen, that’s right!  After all the Holy Spirit was present and responsible for directing my heart to repent and trust the Lord.  In the court of law there is normally a key witness.  The Spirit of God is definitely a key witness to our salvation.   There’s another key witness, that is the Word of God.  Consider please… 1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.  When we look into God’s book it should reinforce our assurance of salvation.   Notice the words… That ye may know.  Our relationship to the Father is not to be a hope so, maybe so, but rather a know so!  I don’t think I’m married,  I know I am!  I don’t think I wear a size 13 shoe, I know I do!  I don’t think I’m 66 years old, I know I am!  I don’t think I’m going to Heaven, I know I am!  You see, it’s not based on what I do for the Lord, it’s based on what the Lord has done for me!  Salvation is by grace, through faith, not of works.  Our relationship is totally based on grace.  Our reward is based on our works.
The Lord doesn’t want his children to wonder if they are saved, he desires them to know.
