Honor thy father…

Exodus 20:12  Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
Tomorrow is Father’s Day.  We are instructed in God’s word over and over to honor our parents.  It is vitally important that we realize that honoring our father is more than just obedience.   It has to do with our attitude as well.  I heard a story about a little boy who was standing up in the front seat of his dad’s truck.  His dad said… Sit down son. Again, son I said sit down.  One more time… son, if you don’t sit down I’m gonna pull this truck over and wear you out!  The little boy promptly sat down.  Then… wait for it… he looked over at his dad and said… I’m sitting down on the outside but I’m still standing up on the inside!  He obeyed,  but his attitude stank!   Many are like me, your father has passed away and you miss him dearly.  My dad was faithful to his family and to his faith in the Lord Jesus.  I miss going hunting with my dad.  I miss his Sunday afternoon call… What’d you preach on this morning son?  I was about 25 years old the last time I had a disagreement with my dad.  When I apologized to him I said… Dad, you’ve never done anything to deserve to be talked to like that.  God being my helper, I’ll never speak to you that way again.  I was 56 when dad went to be with Jesus.  God helped me to keep my word and honor my father.  I’m so glad I did.  It’s not easy sometimes to honor another.  God didn’t make a stipulation on the difficulty,  He just said do it!   Many of you still have your father with you.  Go out of your way tomorrow and everyday to honor him.  I promise the day will come when you’ll be glad you did.  You that are fathers, love your family, protect them, provide for them, point them to the Savior in both your words and your deeds.  God is well pleased with such a dad.  Jesus said without me ye can do nothing.  Looks like to me that would include being a good dad.  We can be a good dad, but we’re gonna need some help!  We can honor our dad, but we’re gonna need some help!  I’m so glad He’s a very present help!  Amen.
