Matthew 5: 13

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out, and trodden
under foot of men.
Christians are like salt because they are  precious. In Jesus’ day, salt was a highly valued commodity. Roman soldiers were sometimes paid with salt, thats where we get the phrase “worth his salt.”  God’s people are also like salt because they have a preserving influence. Salt is used to preserve meats and to slow decay.  There is a family in our church that gives me a salt cured ham for Christmas every year.  Years ago, and in bible times, there were no freezers, or refrigerators.  Salt was absolutely necessary in order to preserve some meats.  When we allow the flesh, the world, and the Devil to infiltrate our lives the salt becomes diluted.  We become less and less effective at the very purpose we are left here for.  In other words… a good for nothing Christian.   What a shame to have Jesus in our heart, and yet fail to create a thirst for him in the lives of others by being salty!  Our society is crumbling before our very eyes.   One reason is a failure on our part as God’s dear children to have a godly influence on others.  Think about the salty people that pointed you to Jesus.    Psalm 34:8  O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.  A little salt will help.  Amen.  Pastor
